Part of the Annual Users' Meeting

Find out how recent advances in beam line automation can simplify data collection and structure determination at SSRL and ALS as well as other synchrotron facilities. Topics will include robotic sample mounting, automated loop centering, crystal screening software, and new options for data backup. Learn how to take advantage of these new tools, hear about what is being developed, and let us know how to best meet your needs.

Afternoon Speakers
1:00-2:10

Location:  Redwood Room,  SLAC building 48

New technologies for high-throughput crystallography at synchrotrons will be introduced focusing on the benefits and concerns of general users.  Speakers on each topic will be given a short list of issues to address during their presentations (discussion topics).  These questions are based on user concerns such as system efficiency, information transport, remote accessibility, cross compatibility, and data retrieval. Following the speakers on each topic, there will be an open discussion about these issues.  This feedback is extremely valuable for planning developments that best match the needs of our user community.

The names of colleagues who have agreed to contribute and topics are listed below.

SSRL Hands-on Session
(Option 1)
2:20-4:30

Location:  SSRL beam line 9-2,  SLAC building 120

This hands-on session will prepare SSRL users to perform automated crystal screening, as this capability will be available at all macromolecular crystallography beam lines during the first SPEAR3 run.  Each participant will be given a ‘cassette loading kit’ and will use the kit contents to mount crystals into SSRL sample cassettes.  They will find out how to best ship cassettes and how to upload crystal information into the blu-ice control system database.  They will then learn to use the new blu-ice screening interface to control the sample mounting robot to carry out automated screening and data collection.

  • Cassette Loading and Database Entry
Irina Tsyba, Irimpan Mathews, and Aina Cohen

  • Crystal Screening, Data Collection and Data Backup
    Paul Ellis and Dan Harrington

This section of the workshop is restricted to one representative per group with a maximum of 20 participants.

SSRL Tour and Demonstration
(Option 2)
2:20-4:30

Location:  SSRL beam line 11-1,  SLAC building 120

Participants in this session will view a demonstration of the SSRL robotic sample mounting system in action at BL11-1 and get a sneak preview of new blu-ice features. They will also see the new cassette loading tools and will meet some of the SSRL software and hardware developers. A tour will also give an overview of the SPEAR3 upgrade. (Visiting lecturers are welcome to attend.)

  • SSRL Tour with Ashley Deacon

  • Robot and Blu-ice Demonstration with
Scott McPhillips, Mitch Miller, Jinhu Song, Henry van den Bedem, and Guenter Wolf

This section of the workshop is restricted to a maximum of 20 participants.

Reception
5:00

Location: SLAC Pankofsky auditorium breezeway

Please join us for this post-workshop / pre-users' meeting registration reception. The vendor exhibits will also be open at this time.
