MSC Cryo-Xe-Siter

Introduction

For many protein crystals, pressurization with the noble gases Xe and Kr can be an easy method for introducing a heavy atom into the structure. The MSC Cryo-Xe-Siter may be used while at SSRL for Xe or Kr derivation. The advantage of this device is that it allows the protein crystal to be cooled to cryogenic temperatures while still under pressure. Given the apparent off rates for Xe and Kr gas, this device may produce better results than those from standard pressure cells such as the SSRL low temperature pressure cell. The standard SSRL low temperature cell is available for use at each of our beamlines and requires no advance preparation. However, if you would like to use the MSC cryo-siter during your experimental time, please arrange with support staff prior to your arrival to schedule a training session.
